Click here to upgrade: Spitronics Callisto ECU – Race Pack Upgrade

The race features enhance the ECU’s capability for aggressive tuning and motorsport use, allowing users to tailor engine behaviour for track environments without needing to change ECU hardware. This flexible upgrade ensures you only pay for race functionality when required.

Upgrade Highlights:

  • Available on Standard or Advanced Callisto ECU

  • One-time upgrade cost of R950

  • Ideal for track days and competition use

  • No hardware change required

Callisto is a cost-effective product representing the new generation of our mid-range products. It is sold in three dedicated versions:

  • Engine Control Unit (ECU)
  • Transmission Control Unit (TCU)
  • Throttle-by-Wire Controller (TxW)

These versions are not interchangeable.

Each application group contains the correct electronic components, such as diodes and resistors, required for that specific application. This eliminates complicated harness modifications where these components would otherwise have to be installed in the wiring loom. It also reduces unnecessary component count inside the product, which helps keep the unit cost-effective.

Callisto includes both negative and positive drivers, allowing the system to drive many devices directly. This reduces costs because Callisto does not require external coil drivers when using basic coils.

The unit can connect directly to most sensors found on engines and transmissions.

Callisto is supplied with a wide range of firmware developed by Spitronics to support many applications used so far. This makes it a versatile product to keep in stock.

Units can be purchased unprogrammed, allowing the correct firmware to be loaded when the sale is made. This is very useful for dealers who wish to keep inventory without needing to stock many different variants.

Harness systems are simplified, and each product group is supplied with specialised wiring looms.

Overview

This versatile standalone automotive controller is designed as a cost-effective and durable replacement for modern vehicle electronic control units. It can be used on a wide variety of engines, transmissions, and other automotive control applications.

The system includes unique and practical features that make installation and tuning straightforward. It has been designed with both novice and professional installers in mind.

This South African-developed product can easily be customised for various engines, transmissions, and throttle-by-wire systems. Typical applications include:

  • racing engines
  • vehicle conversions
  • custom-built vehicles
  • replacement controllers for production vehicles
  • entertainment features such as pops and bangs

The unit is compact and reliable and may be epoxy-filled to create a rugged and water-resistant controller suitable for harsh environments. It can easily be mounted inside the driver’s compartment.

Firmware Protection

Callisto is intentionally not reprogrammable by the end user. This design decision was made to prevent support issues experienced with earlier systems.

Instead, the ECU is programmed with the correct firmware for the specific engine configuration. Certain settings that could cause damage if changed incorrectly are locked to simplify the setup procedure and improve reliability.

Because drivers are shared across many possible applications, this controlled firmware system is necessary to ensure correct operation.

Dealer Stock Model

Callisto can be supplied as an open box unit if a qualified dealer wishes to keep stock. This allows the dealer to keep fewer variants on hand and configure the unit when the sale is made.

The product is sold in a Commercial class, with an optional RacePack that unlocks advanced features such as launch control, spinning, and drifting functions.

This makes the system suitable for both:

  • everyday vehicles
  • performance applications

Qualified dealers may purchase systems at reduced prices in an unactivated status. This allows better control of cash flow within their businesses.

Activation of additional features can be performed online. Once activated, the remaining balance is paid and the full functionality becomes available.

Hardware and System Design

The Callisto unit is designed to connect directly to most sensors and actuators used on engines, transmissions, and other automotive systems without modification.

It uses modern high-speed microcontrollers and surface-mount technology. All components are machine-soldered to minimise human assembly errors.

  • Lambda control
  • idle control
  • launch control
  • cam control
  • stepper motor control
  • throttle-by-wire control
  • boost control
  • line pressure control
  • fuel pressure control
  • Tiptronic transmission control

The controller can directly drive intelligent coils, injectors, solenoids, and throttle-by-wire motors. It can also read signals from sensors such as:

  • coolant temperature
  • intake air temperature
  • throttle position
  • manifold pressure
  • crank position
  • cam position
  • lambda sensors
  • fuel pressure sensors

Tuning Software

The Cosmos tuning software is designed to be user-friendly and allows the tuner to configure the various features of the system. This makes the Callisto adaptable to a wide variety of applications.

To learn more about the system, browse through the features and specifications provided in the following sections.

Features

Note that some features are only available in RacePack versions, depending on whether enough drivers are available for all required tasks. Refer to the selection chart for the capabilities of the different classes.

Fuel Delivery

  • Accurate fuel delivery and injection timing improve performance and fuel consumption by maintaining consistent atomisation for each cylinder.
    • Injection methods available include Batch, Split Batch, Split Sequential, and Full Sequential.
    • Different tuning methods can be selected, such as graph, matrix, or a combination of both.
    • All graphs and matrix data are 2D or 3D interpolated to ensure smooth fuel calculation accuracy across the entire operating range.
    • Fuel calculation is based on MAP or TPS signals versus RPM, or a combination of the two. This accommodates engines ranging from street applications to racing, and from economy to high performance.
    • Additional sensors used to adjust the fuel mixture include water temperature, air temperature, altitude, lambda, battery voltage, and throttle response.
    • Fuel injection timing resolution is adjustable between 6° and 30°, depending on the crank trigger type.
    • The MAP sensor reading angle can be adjusted for multiple throttle body systems, with the same degree of resolution as above.
    • Dual injectors can be controlled using two methods:
  • Staged injectors with Ratio adjustment
  • Graph phased method
    • Injector trimming is available for up to 8 injectors when running full sequential injection.
    • Fuel enrichment can be applied during Launch, RapidFire, or retard functions.

Ignition Spark & Timing

  • Callisto can manage distributor ignition, wasted spark coil packs, wasted spark COP coils, or full sequential ignition systems.
    • Standard automotive coil packs can be used. Smart coils or basic coils may be wired directly without modification.
    • External coil drivers such as the Orion 4-way or 6-way drivers can be stacked to support V12 systems or V8 dual-coil engines (which may have up to 16 coils).
    • High-performance internal drivers ensure a strong spark suitable for a wide range of fuel mixtures and include built-in overload protection.
    • Callisto provides very accurate ignition timing, especially when using gear-type trigger systems.
    • Ignition timing is calculated using MAP or TPS versus RPM, or a combination of both.
    • Additional sensors used to modify ignition timing include water temperature, air temperature, and altitude.
Battery voltage compensation adjusts coil charge time, particularly useful during cold starting or when alternator voltage is outside the normal range.

Sensors

  • Callisto supports most standard automotive sensors without requiring modifications to distributors or additional converter boards.
Custom bolt-on trigger gears may be used for older engines running carburettors or engines with incorrect trigger setups.
    • Gear-type triggers provide more accurate and responsive timing, particularly during throttle blip conditions. This method is preferred for racing applications.
    • Sensors can be calibrated within the software to suit various sensor types.

Idle Control & Cold Start

Idle control assists with cold starting and maintains a stable idle speed when additional loads, such as air conditioning or automatic transmissions, draw power from the engine.

  • On-board idle control supports one-wire and two-wire idle valves.
Spitronics stepper control units may be connected to control quad and bipolar stepper motors.

Launch Control

Launch control increases boost pressure during vehicle pull-off to eliminate turbo lag.
Activation methods include:

  • Buttons
    • Clutch switches
    • POT position
    • Other programmable inputs

Launch Delay Recover

This function restores full engine power with an adjustable ramp delay, improving traction during launch conditions.

Dual Injectors

Callisto can control dual injectors when using specialised firmware. Fuel can be added using either:

  • Ratio control
    • Graph control

Anti-Lag

Anti-Lag increases boost pressure during racing conditions to eliminate turbo lag in corners.

  • An optional output can activate EGR valves to bypass turbo pressure to the exhaust.
    • This assists with engine braking in corners and helps maintain boost pressure for faster acceleration when exiting the corner.

RapidFire

RapidFire creates a machine-gun-style exhaust sound commonly used in drifting applications.

  • Frequency is adjustable
    • Flame intensity at the exhaust outlet can be adjusted

Variable Rev and Launch Limiters

These limiters allow real-time adjustment of RPM limits during operation.

Flat-Shift

Flat-shift temporarily cuts engine power during wide-open throttle gear changes, assisting with manual gear shifting.

Dual Maps

The ECU can store two different fuel and performance maps, useful for weekend racing or switching between performance modes.

Map Change On The Fly

Drivers can switch between maps while driving.

General Purpose Outputs

Up to six GP drivers can be used if available. These can control devices such as:

  • Injectors
    • Cooling fans
    • Shift lights
    • Air-conditioning cut-out during pull-off or uphill conditions

Standard Harness

A universal harness system reduces the need to keep multiple harness types in stock.

Level 2 harnesses include relays and fuses to simplify installation and save time.

All input harness wiring uses screened cables to reduce electromagnetic interference that could cause unstable ECU behaviour.

Compact Electronics

The ECU is compact and can easily be installed under the dashboard with minimal space requirements.
